Radio / TV / DX in St. Petersburg |

From 28.6 - 14.7 I stayed in St. Petersburg Russia. Although being quite
busy with exploring the city I found a bit time to check the bands. I stayed
in a home not far away from the TV tower, so my Sangean ATS 909 and my VR500
had a hard time. Unfortunately the residential house had very heavy interference
all day long on LW / MW / SW, so it was not a good place to DX. Even listening
to the local MW-Tx of DW, BBC & RFI was quite difficult. I checked TV
channel E2 range for carriers but had no luck, however on Sunday 11.07 when
we stayed at my friends datcha about 80km north, just 90km off the Finnish
border I got German TV sound on E2, one of the carriers indicated it came
from Biedenkopf. Interestingly this happened when a large thunderstorm developed
not far from us. The signal did not stay very long. Exactly the same I have
observed several times at home in Germany. so thunderstorms do have an effect,
although the reason is unclear to me FM Contrary to FM stations in Siberia the ones in SPb do modulate quite nicely, my Sangean with the narrow filter displayed RDS without problems. To my surprise Dinamit FM carries no more RDS, last year when I flew over SPb it had RDS. Hit FM and Melodia carry separate programming on OIRT and CCIR band. On Tuesday 13.07 from 10:00-11:15 (when I left) a number of stations (marked as "o" ) where off the air, due to Profilaktika (maintenance) TV Since we were close to the TV tower only VHF channels were viewable, on UHF were too much reflection, as we only used the built-in antenna of the TV set. LW & MW Due to heavy interference I only listened to DW to get news from Germany. Not far from this site in the Professor Popov street is the Popov museum located in a room of the university. I was the only visitor and got a guided tour. Popov made major inventions in the field of radio communications but could not file patents, since the developments were treated as military secrets. Marconi however used them and got pretty rich. |

From these antennas I have received on numerous occasions TV channel R1 and all OIRT-FM radio stations in central Germany, it is just the right distance for sporadic E propagation. |
